Tarantino’s Style
- Ordering
narrative – Some events in Tarantino’s workdoes not flow chronologically. Thepatterns
in the films differ from the original writings which frame the movies. For
instance, in the Rum Punch novel byJackie Brown, activities do not occur sequentially
in both the True Romance and the Natural Born Killers films which are
derived from the narrative. Moreover, in the Kill Bill, Beatrix’s death list is indicated as ‘death list one’
which may suggest series of events but on the contrary Vernita Green sequence
opens again with a title ‘Chapter One’ that has rearranged his story.
- Characterization/casting-
Tarantino’s style of work is characterized byboth the traditional and modern
features. He mentionsthat, some of his productions areprimed by the concerns
and thecare oftraditional interests in the Reservoir
Dogs. Besides, the numerous flashbacks about the early history in the Pulp Fictionfurther bring the
old-fashionedcharacteristics. Nevertheless,
most of the actions in the Reservoir Dogsfilm
have been set based on modern settings.
- Choosing
settings/locales- Tarantino has a diversifiedchoice offilm scenes and locales
which he bases his movies. For instance, in theReservoir Dogshe entirely relies on a single city in America while
in the Pulp Fiction he chooses
locales that reachto other parts of the world such as Marcellus’ empire in
France. Besides,in theKill Billhecovers
many scenes which are located in Japan, Mexico, China, and California
- Filming violence- Ferocity actions
are clearly displayed in the Reservoir
Dogs and the Pulp Fiction films.
For instance, in the former, merciless actions such as ear-slicing and torture
of the captive cop by Mr. Blondeare evident while in the latter cruelty has
been portrayed by the deaths caused by Vincent and Jules.
- Ending
film- Gallafent describes most of Tarantino’s films as having a happy
ending. A good example of a jovial conclusionisexpressedin
the Kill Bill V2 where Tarantino
brings out a cheerful moment between a child and her mother after she had been
rescued from a kidnapper. Besides, the death of the kidnapper who is an ogre
makes the ending more jovial since the security of other children is now
guaranteed.
