Gateway High School is geared towards enhancing the overall student’s artistic, academic, technological and social skills. All these qualities will help the student encounter the challenges of a swiftly changing and progressively diverse society with a knowledgeable approach. Gateway High School (GHS) is dedicated to excellence and to nurturing all students for the decisions involving opportunities beyond secondary school. Career and Technical Education department is on its way to accomplish this goal. It has quite a variety of course descriptions that are pursued by students on their way to building a successful post secondary life, in a career of their choice. The technical education and career training is centered round three broad categories: industrial education, health science and business technology.

Under industrial education, there is Drafting; a course designed to offer instruction in development of graphic communication proficiency. Health science trains health science and nursing assistants. The health science course equips students with common skills performed by a vast number of health care personnel in nursing homes, hospitals and extra care agencies. A nursing assistant course provides an opportunity to learn the duties of workers in major health career groups in order to make out an individual career goal. Business technology has Web Design and Development, Digital Design, New Media and Digital Video Fundamentals. Web Design and Development teaches internet basics, World Wide Web and Internet. New Media and Digital Video Fundamentals expound on camcorders, scanners and digital cameras to simulate professional projects.

Digital Design involves telecommunications, multimedia presentations, internet, scanners and computers. Various technological advances with respect to the above areas mentioned are dwelt upon in detail to provide basic concepts in current digital publishing industry. Programs and applications to be used include Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign. A diverse understanding of future technological exploits is achieved. An industry certification exam needs to be successfully completed as well as Tech Prep Test for proper college credits. A curriculum guide and testing schedule is available for the students from the start of these courses.

Katherine Donato, a career specialist at Gateway High School, believes that the Career and Technical Education is vital to get a clear picture of what the future holds for any student. Dwelling in this Career program ensures that, not only does the school equip a student with basic knowledge, but also skills needed to acquire a fundamental basis for the future undertakings. Stephen Fisher, a technology teacher at GHS, is fixed on the idea that the dexterity acquired upon completion of any technical course is enough to think of entrepreneurial activities in the future. It gives any trainee an edge over other competitors in the society and builds momentum for university studies.

A career pathway program provides thorough and applicable instruction focused on training for both college and the workplace. It goes beyond traditional technical and career education to incorporate academic and technical curricula, increase career options, raise student goals and provide a significant education context for every student. Career Academies combine college-preparatory syllabus with a career subject. Academic courses are associated with technical classes that focus on the school’s field of work. This is more than enough reason to approve such courses at the local school board since it achieves the school’s mission effectively. Technological, artistic and academic skills, outlined in the mission statement, are achieved to help cope with increasing challenges in the society.
