Measures to Reduce the Risk of Flooding Within a City

            Several measures can be taken to reduce the risk of flooding in the community under consideration. First, city officials can build better flood warning systems. These systems will allow people enough time to evacuate from the flood-prone areas, and thus, save many lives. Advance warning and adequate pre-planning can largely reduce the impact of flooding on the city dwellers. Secondly, the engineers can modify the homes and business premises in such a way that it enables them adequately withstand floods. In this case, the directorate of civil engineering within the local administration should oversee the creation of concrete floors on these facilities. Additionally, the department can spearhead the replacement of materials such as MDF and plasterboard with robust alternatives. Thus, the move will help prevent people from suffering electrocution should the flooding disaster catch them unawares.

            Thirdly, the people should also be encouraged to construct their buildings above the existing flood levels. The city officials can also enforce this regulation by constructing municipal dwellings on higher grounds. As such, when the flooding disaster finally strikes, most people will be out of harm’s way. Construction of buildings at a minimum of one meter above the ground can go a long way in preventing flood damage. Such preventive mechanism can be reinforced with innovative methods like the creation of ample drainage systems to lower the risk of future flooding disasters. Another measure is the protection of wetlands and the introduction of trees strategically by the planners. In this way, wetlands and trees would suck up all the moisture and water from the ground, thus, devoicing the earth surface from floodwater.
