Lab: Close Reading, Distant Reading, and Textual Analysis

Part I: Close Reading

1. The sonnet is about the previous state of hopelessness and depression for the persona but who now seems to have recovered via joyous thoughts of love.

2. The words eyes and cries, state and fate, hope and scope, and possess’d and least rhyme. The last syllables of the words rhyme in a regular pattern across the sonnet.

3. The first section of the sonnet entails a sad tone, whereas the second part describes a happy tone. The first part features a sad tone since the speaker describes her previous stressful and unhappy life. However, things seemed to have changed in the second part, thus signifying the possibility of a happier recovery.

4. Disgrace, beweep, wishing, desiring, and sweet love.

5. Lines one, five, ten, and thirteen are the four most important parts since they establish both the tone and theme of the sonnet.

Part II: Distant Reading with Voyant Word Frequencies

6. Love

7. Love, doth, shall, sweet, and time.

8. Yes, the words love, and sweet are found in sonnet 29.

9. Sweet has a frequency of 56, whereas love has a frequency of 168.

Close Vs. Distant Reading

12.  Themes and tones of the sonnets can be inferred at close reading.

13. Rhyme words and rhyming schemes are information than can be inferred from distant reading.

14. I prefer close reading to distant reading since the former offers me a chance to synthesize some crucial subjective information concerning the speaker in the sonnet.

Sentimental Analysis

15.  The book review in Amazon.com about “The Second Chance Café” by Alison Kent offers a confident and positive tone that seeks to inspire and attract a broader readership.

16.  Yes, it does reflect on my conclusion.

17. I think that the “MLK I Have a Dream Speech” contains a neutral tone. No, I was not correct. The sentimental analysis portrayed a positive confidence of 94%.  The phrase “Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!” brings about a definite conclusion.

18. I think that the “TrumpInauguration” contains a positive tone. Yes, I was correct.  I was not surprised since the sentimental analysis portrayed a positive confidence of 96.1%. The phrase “Together, we will determine the course of America and the world for years to come,” seeks to establish a positive tone.

19. The “Little Mermaid Live Review” features a negative review. The phrase “You didn’t care about the boring animated parts” influenced the negative review.

20. The three keywords identified in the Amazon Glitter Review are creative art, Charles Leonard Glitter, and Glitter. No, the Amazon Glitter is not a legitimate review since the second keyword does not make sense.
