Effective Project Management
The increasing number of Information Technology administrators from several disciplines are disregarding Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). The significant reasons are that SNMP is old and mainly being displaced as a powerful tool for network management. The alternatives to managing networks include Network Configuration Protocol (NETCONF), Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP), and OpenFlow. However, studies on some of these tools reveal that they are relatively new, for example, NetConf; hence largely ignored (Venezia, n.d). NetConf is an XML-based network management protocol and first appeared in 2006. This tool allows flowof content and operations using SSL and SSH as wellwe BEEP (Venezia, n.d). For instance, one can issue commands to the device through XML-based communication. Hence, unlike the SNMP, NetConf is an advanced method utilized in controlling networked devices.
CMIP was explicitly designed with a focus on addressing SNMP deficiencies. Comparatively, the two tools still compete in several aspects. For instance, SNMP is simple; therefore, easy to implement compared to CMIP (Venezia, n.d). However, regarding performance, CMIP is safer. Besides, its variables can relay information and also perform tasks. The tool’s capability is powerful, allowing management applications to perform several tasks efficiently using a single command. Therefore, network administrators can acquire the desired value in network management by combining the two tools.
Lastly, OpenFlow protocol can define and modify as well as delete flows in a network. It offers inflow and outflow of messages, hence controllers can easily manage user traffics. These capabilities are lacking in the SNMP (Venezia, n.d). Hence, it is easy to utilize OpenFlow in managing the flow of data and control of user traffic than it is with SNMP.
