Discussion #9

The predisposition directed towards Iceland by CIS sectors is based largely on its renewable energy resources. As a country that is famous largely for its natural sceneries, Iceland has also become a rather attractive location for the establishment of data centers as well as internet-based activities. Arguably, this has been linked to the country’s reliance on clean energy, which is generated from the use of geothermal wells and hydroelectric dams. While the location may offer a pristine resource to these CIS establishments, it is imperative to focus on the impact that such approaches will impose on the country’s environmental sustainability. Since data and the internet constitute valuable commodities in the contemporary business environment, Ireland may be subjected to the similar issues of sustainability that affect most parts of the world as far as the replenishment of raw materials is concerned.

By allowing more firms and sectors to establish their data centers and technological facilities within the location, Iceland may be exposed to the dangers of exploitation and non-replenishment of the energy resources that it utilizes on routine basis, specifically hydroelectric dams, and geothermal wells. In addition to this, the country will be rendered incapable of achieving environmental sustainability in the event that it allows the establishment of industries related to the CIS sectors. Accordingly, Iceland relies on the replication of natural and renewable energy for the aim of enabling operations across all platforms. Nonetheless, the industries in question are also reliant on the application of energy in an effort to maximize the efficacy of their operations. In this respect, facilitating the establishment of these industries will greatly affect the extent to which Iceland will be capable of producing energy sufficient for its operations and simultaneously significant for data centers and tech-based sectors within the country. In retrospect, it would be unwise for the CIS industries to locate facilities in Iceland as an outcome of the negative implications that they will impose on the country due to their energy-intensive demands.
