In the past, intelligence was determined by IQ tests, which measured intelligence solely in reading and math inferring that some students were smart and others were not. How does Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences refute these past notions and empower and challenge teachers to believe in and support the ability of all students to learn and succeed in school?
Referring to the “Integrating Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences” article, summarize the difference between learning styles theory and Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, and explain at least one way that these two theories work together to foster effective teaching and learning.
In the “Reconcilable Differences? Standards-Based Teaching and Differentiation” article, author Carol Ann Tomlinson states: “What we call differentiation is not a recipe for teaching. It is not an instructional strategy. It is not what a teacher does when he or she has time.” Considering that this is what differentiation is not, explain, in your own words, what differentiation is and at least one way you plan to apply differentiation in your future classroom or setting.
In the same article, Tomlinson adds, “There is no contradiction between effective standards-based instruction and differentiation.” Summarize why effective teachers make sure effective standards-based instruction and differentiation are one in the same.
