Massacre at Mystic Thought Paper
The paper is to be a minimum of three full pages up to and not to exceed five pages. There will be no cover page.
This paper is due on October 5th at the beginning of class and must be submitted electronically in duplicate. It is OPTIONAL – and will be graded on a five point scale to be added to your first chapter test grade. Rules about plagiarism and collaboration, as for any work at the University, should be strictly observed.
Format: Standard academic paper format: 8 1?2” x 11” paper, typed; Times New Roman 12 point font; 1” margins all around, double-spaced. You are to put the course title, my name, your name and the date on the first page, like so:

You are also to give your writing a title of your own devising. DO NOT USE “Massacre at Mystic”.
Your paper will be graded on the quality of your analysis, the terseness of your language and proper formatting, spelling and grammar. This is a college paper and carelessness will detract from your grade.
The structure of the paper should be: an introduction, a paragraph or two or three on each of the writing prompts, a discussion of your point of view overall, and a conclusion.
NOTE: in an academic paper do not use contractions such as: don’t; can’t, it’s; or slang, jargon, abbreviations or informal language. Do not use the first person pronouns such as I, me or my.
Writing prompts:
Why did the massacre occur, what were the specific conditions that provoked it?
If you were to interview one of the English participants in the massacre, how might he defend slaughtering the elderly, women and children in a military style assault? What might a Narragansett or a Mohegan warrior say?
What was the European attitude towards the wilderness and those who inhabited the wilderness?
What did this massacre mean in terms of setting a pattern in European/Native American relations in New England?
