The Poetry Essay between 550-650 words ( a minimum of five paragraphs that include an introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion) and the works cited must have the one source (–Literature for Life–the source for the three required quotes). Make sure that your essay has the standard essay elements: a one-paragraph introduction, a multi-paragraph body (at least three paragraphs), and a one-paragraph conclusion. Your introductory paragraph should open with a generalization about the poem on which you are writing which contains the author and title of the poem. Your introductory paragraph should also state your specific thesis regarding the topic given for this poem. The body of your essay should contain your supporting ideas for your thesis. Each body paragraph should focus on one specific point of support for your thesis. Each body paragraph should contain properly incorporated and relevant direct quotes of support/illustration from the poem, as well as your analysis/discussion of these quotes. Avoid beginning or ending your body paragraphs with direct quotes. Begin your body paragraphs with topic sentences that express a main idea of support for your thesis. Work the direct quotes into your body paragraphs after their topic sentences. Be sure to analyze and discuss the direct quotes, spelling out specifically how these particular quotes support and/or illustrate your interpretive points. The concluding paragraph of your essay must include the poet’s name and the title of the poem, restate your thesis, and deliver a closing statement. Make sure that you do not introduce any new points of analysis that have not been covered in the body of your essay. Be sure to follow the rules of standard grammar, punctuation, spelling, mechanics, and wording in your essay. Also, adhere to the conventions of writing about poetry in terms of title designation, use of present tense primarily, and quotation incorporation. Remember to include a Works Cited page even though you will only have one entry—Literature for Life.
