Role of researcher

Action research is a method of research that is initiated in order to solve a problem that may have arisen. Individuals or teams working with each other to solve the problem and address the issue lead this research. This process requires active participation of the researcher in the whole research process. Action research may be undertaken by large institutions in order to improve their practices and strategies and subsequently their output. In the case of large organizations, they require the help of a professional researcher to undertake the study. A researcher is a person who performs a general but systematic investigation in order to establish facts. They can work in sectors such as medicine, academic, industrial and private organizations.

The researcher has several roles in the process of research. Such roles include facilitator and data collector. The researcher is the facilitator of the research. This means that he or she contributes process and structure for the team to function effectively during the research process. Data collection is another role of the researcher. This is because he or she is the person concerned with the process of collection and compilation of the data obtained from the study. The process of compilation is the analysis of the data collected is important because it provides the results and conclusion of the study.

There are two broad classifications of researchers. They may be either independent researchers or researchers who are stakeholders in the process. In this research process, the researches were interested stakeholders. In such a case, the research process will be more effective since the researcher is already conversant with the topic under study. This enables them to address the problems directly as required or expected. The researcher may be a nurse who has worked in the said hospital and, therefore, knows its problems well.

3. Variations of groupings

A focus group is a group of people who are asked questions concerning the topic under study. This method is mostly used in qualitative research. The researcher facilitates these focus groups throughout the research process. This is especially beneficial for the researcher who is also a stakeholder because he or she knows the exact questions to ask during the focus group. Focus groups also provide researchers with an opportunity to interact directly with the people who are being interviewed. This is important because they gain confidence in the researcher and can give responses that are more honest.

Participants in this study include patients, nurses, physical therapists and nursing supervisors. Groupings for the participants are necessary for the study. This is because people of similar fields will have similar ideas and problems and this will make the researchers’ job a lot easier. If there were no grouping, the responses obtained would be haphazard since people are not from the same field. Grouping is also important since it makes the participants comfortable, as it includes the people that they work with. This approach in turn will lead to an honest response to the questions posed to them by the researcher.

The grouping should be based on their fields of work. For instance, all the nurses should belong to one focus group and their supervisors in another group. Patients and the physical therapists should belong to different focus groups, as well. This is done to enhance the accuracy of the study conducted. For this study, no experimental or control studies were required to participate. This is because it is a systematic inquiry about how the stakeholders in this situation can be better trained to prevent hospital falls (Gay et al, 2009).
