This essay requires you to look at three short stories, probably a different short story in each topic paragraph. the stories are “the lottery” by Shirley Jackson, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and “a pair of tickets” by Amy Tan.
write a five paragraph essay on one of the following subjects making one of the story as lead topic and correlating it to other two, and the subjects are
I. illustrate a point about the nature of authority or tradition.
II. Define the hero (heroine) as rebel, individualist, or non-conformist. Or discuss critically the failure of the individual as such.

2. Are you making a critical or an affirmative point about authority or individualism?
3. Is there a direct line from the characters you are studying and the theme of the story to the point you make?
4. What one story have you chosen as a lead point, and can you find other stories that have direct correlation?
