Art history of islamic world (Paper required a museum visit and local mosque)

ARTH 320: Art History of the Islamic World

The paper assignment requires a museum visit and a visit to a local Mosque. You may choose any object from the Islamic world that is on display at an area Museum. There are several choices listed below.  You must also visit a mosque and the most accessible one is the Islamic Center Mosque located in D. C. Its address is listed below.

Please call the mosque before you go as it is closed to visitors at prayer time. Every visitor should be properly dressed when entering the mosque; this means no shorts, no bare arms, and a head covering for women.  Shoes need to be removed before entering the mosque.

Your paper should have a theme that links an object from the museum to your visit to the mosque. At the mosque, you may choose an architectural element or decorative feature, etc.

Then,  Describe each of your choices.  Then, Compare and contrast the two objects you have chosen.  How are they similar? Different?  Why? Then, how do they define the world of Islam?  And, why did you choose them?

Your paper should be: 5-6 pages, typed, double-spaced, spell-checked, grammar- checked, complete sentences, and on time. Please cite your sources in footnotes and

provide identifying information for the museum object you chose.

A good paper will show that you: 1) visited both museum & mosque; 2) understand the

characteristics of  Islamic art & architecture; 3) have the ability to write a well organized

paper with a title, a theme, an introduction, , a clear purpose & argument with a strong conclusion.
