Psychophysics

Considering the positive effects of psychophysics, scientists should work towards applying the tool of this branch of psychology in their various areas of expertise, especially in settings that seek to improve patient’s health. Already, various psychology institutions are employing the concept and are yielding positive results from their application. The Munsell Lab, for instance, uses psychophysics to test whether subjects can differentiate various types of colors with the motive of identifying the individuals’ tolerance for colors before posting them to specific operational areas (Aaen-Stockdale 637). Such successful results should encourage firms to employ the scientific concept to achieve accuracy. Moreover, instructors should put more effort to enlighten learners about the various concepts of psychophysics to allow them to apply its features in practical areas. They should identify the areas that are more relevant for the learners at various stages of their development and ensure the students understand all the core aspects related with the field. Instructors, for instance, should make clear the distinction between sensation and perception and let the trainees know that whereas the former refers to the detection of physical energy by the sense organs, the latter implies to the brain’s understanding of unstructured sensory inputs. Students should also develop the urge to acquire more insight into the topic to advance their awareness of some of the key components such as how the sensory system functions and how the classical psychophysical frameworks contribute to the area of study.

I once attended a group meeting where the participants discussed the features of psychophysics and how it may help to improve human performance. I noted that so many people are yet to understand the finer aspects of the concept, which calls for increased interaction with literature that inform about the core features and applicability of psychophysics. Nonetheless, it may be hard to understand how psychophysics may benefit people yet the area of study presents so much insight, particularly with regard to the functions of the sense organs. I am committed to conduct more studies into the area to gain more awareness on how psychophysics could be of benefit.

Signal Detection Theory

I have had some encounter with Signal Detection Theory (SDT) that gives a graphic presentation and correct language for evaluating decision making when uncertainty prevails (Wickens 71). I once visited a friend who worked on a project to find out whether SDT has a direct effect on people in the way it facilitates sensory capabilities. Judging from my encounter from the visit I concluded that scholars should embrace measures that would increase awareness of how the area works, as well as how people may acquire more benefits from the theory.

Various stakeholders should find an effective approach to understand how SDT works because the concept is applicable in various areas. Learners, for instance, should work hard to know how they can apply the theory in the area of sensitivity, which describes how difficult or easy it is to know that a specific stimulus is derived from past events. Researchers should also not relent in their studies to acquire more insight into how they may apply SDT to make decisions in scenarios where biasness prevails. Learning institutions should hire qualified professionals who are conversant with some of the difficult areas such as the Stevens’ power law that requires the application of mathematical concepts and frameworks to deal with issues.
