Summary of the Article

In the Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy reviewed by Leone, Moja, and Vegni (2013), research was conducted to determine the satisfaction of the quality of life by comparing the patients’ and occupational therapists’ perspectives (Leone et al., 2013). The primary objective of the review was to confirm if the patient’s perceptions of the fulfillment with the quality of life (QoL) have any similarities or differenceswith those held bythe occupational therapist’s attitude in regards to the patient’s comfort. The total number of participants in the study was eighty-one (81), twelve (12) occupational therapists, and sixty-nine (69) patients (Leone et al., 2013). All patients enrolled were issued with Satisfaction Profile (SAT-P) questionnaires that were required to be filled individually. The same questions and SAT-P were also issued to respective occupational therapists that were needed to fill by assessing the patient’s fulfillment on the quality of life as per their perception.

The descriptive statistics were applied in the study to describe the grouping of the socio-demographic data collected from the two groups. A t-test was used to analyze the variations on the patients’ and therapists’ answers in the SAT-P. The whole population of 81 participants in the study was reviewed, and significant difference determined. The significant difference between the patients and therapists was Factor II for physical functioning with a probability of 0.048, and Factor V for social operation, whose probability was 0.011 (p = 0.011) (Leone et al., 2013). Equally, the mean scores from the comparison of the patients and therapists indicated that therapists had a high propensity to underestimate the patients’ gratification with QoL for all factors apart from Factor IV. The review exhibited a strong correlation between the therapists’ and patient’s perspectives on the patient’s fulfillment with QoL. Hence, proving an occupational therapy discipline is client-centered. However, the data analyzed on Factor II for physical functioning shows that therapist perception can be objective regardless of the patients’ subjective nature.

Reflection

The review revealed essential information on the patients’ gratification with QoL by providing statistics for comparing the patients’ and occupational therapists’ perspectives. The study utilized socio-demographic factors to establish a strong correlation between therapists’ and patients’ perspectives on the patient’s fulfillment with QoL. The method sampled 81 participants in the study;12 occupational therapists and sixty-nine patients. This was applicable in the study as therapists were taking care of the patients, and they were aware of their perspectives on life. Hence, it established that occupational therapy is a client-centered discipline. More so, t-test analysis was implemented to determine whether there existed a significant difference in the means of the two groups to other socio-demographic factors. The t-test conducted analyzed the mean differences, standard deviation, and the number of data in the two groups of patients and occupational therapists (Yan et al., 2017). Hence, the t-test determined the hypothesis of the study that there is a strong correlation between the therapist’s and patients’ perspectives on the patient’s fulfillment with QoL, therebyproviding a justification for statistical means in the two groups.

Consequently, the discussion section in the study aligns the results with the data analysis. The review provided an excellent summary of the results showing a strong correlation between the therapists’ and patients’ perspectives on the patient’s fulfillment with QoL (Leone et al., 2013). Besides, the review provided research gaps, research findings, and recommendations that would form a basis for future research on the topic. However, the report did not offer graphical representation or tabulation of socio-demographic factors affecting the patient’s fulfillment with QoL for a visual illustration of the data, hence; limiting the ease of understanding of the results.
