Script on Las Posadas (Christmas in Bedlam)

Overview

The script fits well for a theatre play. Basing on the seamless flow of the ideas presented and the thrilling interactions among the characters, the script can easily be converted into a movie, a good one for that matter. The drama and unique comic effects employed significantly in the script are just but the right ingredients of a good movie.

Style

In many ways, the script is magical. The comedy, thrill, and drama incorporated in the script keeps the reader glued to it from start to end. For example, on page 20, Tere humorously suggests that Lupe’s mum, Mana Emilia, should be tied on their van’s roof in a bid to create more space for Lupe’s stuff. Tere’s joke offers a great comic relief to both the characters and the script’s reader. Additionally, the script opens when Lupe, her godmother, and biological mother together with their neighbors are faced with the fear of getting displaced by a real-estate developer, Ronald, who also happens to be Lupe’s boyfriend’s father. In a thrilling set of events, the readers’ attention gets caught from the start, and thus, scan through the script to find out how everything unfolds.

Characterization

In any script, characters are usually crucial in getting out to the intended audience the writer’s message. For this script, there are many characters, namely:

Mana Emilia Sanchez. Who is 55 years of age and Lupe’s mother. Professionally, she is a midwife and a folk healer. Also, she is a deeply religious person.

Lupe. She is 28 years old, a budding lawyer and also romantically involved with Kit.

Richard Carson, Kit. He is 31 years old, romantically involved with Lupe, and a son to Ronald, a leading real estate developer.

Tere. She is Lupe’s godmother and just like Mana, she is a very religious person.

Carmella. She is a friend of Emilia Sanchez, Tere and Lupe. And a prisoner.

Father Angel Diaz. He is between 55 and 70 years old and a priest of the San Francisco De Asis church.

Yusuf Salid. A wealthy businessman.

Pepe. A plumber by profession.

Benny Santistevan. He is Yusuf’s mechanic.

Even though blood ties or romantic associations connect some, each of these characters is distinctive with separate sets of flaws and growth patterns. For example, Emilia is generally laid back and religious, Ronald is somewhat a nonbeliever. Through such character differentiations, the writer and director are able to put across the various themes in the script.

Relationships

From the onset of each act to end within the script, the relationships that exist among the various characters are vividly described. For example, Tere and Emalia enjoy a cordial friendship throughout the script. The fact that both are believers of the word of God binds them even more. This relationship seems to date back to more than twenty years as evidenced by the fact that Tere is Lupe’s godmother. Lupe and Kit are romantically involved. This relationship, however, gets hit by numerous turbulences as the script rolls on to the extent that Lupe moves out of the apartment she shared with Kit at some point. On the other hand, Richard and Kit seem to have a strenuous father to son relationship in the sense that Kit feels it is time he broke away from his father’s shadow and curve out a reputation for himself in the corporate world.

Structure

In a special way, the script delivers maximum impact, which in turn helps establish and sustain a reader’s momentum. Each act is skillfully crafted in such a manner that it builds on the theme contained in the preceding act.

Dialogue

In this script, awkwardness in the conversations between different characters helps to create the dramatic effect, which keeps a reader glued to it. On page 12, for instance, while seated at the El Fidel Restaurant, Lupe verbally expresses to Tere her per preference of coffee to sex in the presence of her mother, Emalia. Due to the conventional awkwardness associated with children discussing sex matters in the presence of their parents, Tere, while clearly aghast, cryptically advises Lupe to moderate her tone.

Conflict

In a brilliant way, the author realizes his script’s intention through his defining of the life and death of his characters. It is a widely adopted notion that success, or failure in life is never a one-day event, but rather, a series of small events over time. Therefore, the struggle of the characters incorporated in the play helps the reader create a mental picture of the severity of the issues the author describes throughout the script.

Page Notes

Generally, each page of a script roughly equals one minute of screen time. Therefore, considering the fact that this script had 120 pages, the resulting movie would run for two hours.

State the Problem/State the Solution

Dysfunctional family ties. Of particular emphasis is the troubled relationship between Kit and his father. It is mainly occasioned by the fact that kit feels that he has come of age, and thus, deserves to get outside of his father’s shadow and chart his own path to financial freedom. Towards the end of the script, however, they reach an armistice with father angel offering to pray for both of them to gain wisdom from God shortly before they joined the Christmas celebrations.

Why Should It Be Made?

The movie is an intriguing thriller that describes an extraordinary Christmas season. Normally, Christmas festivities are associated with merry making among relatives, friends, church members, and neighbors. Through the vivid description of the conversations between characters, their relationships, and troubles each one of them encounters, the author brilliantly manages to spin off his main idea. The thrilling nature of the script engages a reader’s full attention from start to end.

Dos and Don’ts

Towards the end of the script, Lupe and her father, Romulo seem to work out the differences that have long kept them out of each other’s lives. Conventionally, it is advisable for a father to be involved in his daughter’s life, hence, Romulo it would have been more reasonable for Romulo to offer his apology earlier in her life, long before even she enrolled in law school.

The music selections in every act perfectly describes the idea described by the author in the sense that what the author discusses is in tandem with the songs’ themes.

Character and Scene Descriptions

Throughout the script, the author brilliantly manages to describe the scenes and characters in each of the acts in a manner that helps readers create visually effective mental pictures, and thus, build better understanding of the author’s imagination. For example, on page 114, the author vividly describes how the various characters assembled into a procession that serenaded the Abeyta family at their rancho. Additionally, on page 78, through the author’s vivid description of the scene within Emilia’s house, readers are able to picture Tere sitting on Emilia’s kitchen table seeping coffee while overhearing an argument between Romulo and Lupe.
