Personal Reflection on the Film MindWalk

Socioeconomic, political, and environmental problems are part of what humans face in their daily lives. In an effort to resolve them and enhance their living, various people adopt dissimilar strategies. Some advocate for approaches that view the problems as a system failure that needs to be addressed wholly. Others argue that every problem must be addressed on its own before thinking of anything like a system. This variation in seeing the world exemplifies the holistic vs. atomistic outlooks that are present in MindWalk. In this dialogue-driven film, three characters are engaged in a long conversation on a wide range of issues. Sonia is a Norwegian physicist but he stopped practicing after realizing that his theories were being used to make weapons. Jack is an American politician, and during the previous election, he lost to another aspirant. Tom is Jack’s friend and he is an accomplished poet. Nonetheless, his life is disillusioned and he is no longer interested in writing political speeches. These three protagonists come from entirely different backgrounds, and in their conversation, their different ways of thinking and viewing issues aredemonstrated. They agree that starvation, rainforest depletion, and health problems are some of the problems that have made people’s lives difficult. Sonia thinks these challenges are interconnected and they can only be resolved if they are resolved as a whole. In other words, he thinks that it is the system which is ailing. Jack contends that for the problems to be resolved, the process must start somewhere, and thus, a system-wide resolution is unrealistic. Sonia is for the holistic perception while Jack endorses atomistic outlook. Critically, none of their opinions can be disregarded. Instead, their differences are manifestations of the human exceptionality, and this is the primary theme that the film passes to the audiences.
