The Fateful Day That Changed Me in a Way

“Look before you leap,” is a saying that had never crossed my mind until the day that I made my worst mistake. It was on Christmas, a holiday that is celebrated far and wide. As anticipated, the day was special. In particular, the long-awaited bash that my family had planned, was about to start. The party was to be held at our home. Luckily, my parents had promised to take care of the budget. I had earlier invited to the party, my best friend Mary, who was known for her exuberance. We dedicated the 24th of December for preparations. When the day finally dawned, I had great expectations. My mind visualized a day to remember for decades. Sadly, the turn of events would prove otherwise.

By six a.m, I was already up. I walked out of the house to check on the compound. It was a frosty morning. I cleaned the compound while Mary and my mother were busy preparing the meals and drinks. After thoroughly cleaning, I put up red Nosegay bunchesas decorations. By ten a.m., everything was set. I took a warm bath and wore my favorite pair of red denims, a fitted white t-shirt, and black sports shoes. Mary complimented me on my outfit choice and called me Redii affectionately. It is a nickname bestowed on me by my friends because of my deep love for red-coloured clothes.

Guests began trickling in by 1 p.m. and by 3 p.m., the party was well underway. The food was delicious and in abundance. In addition, there was popular music to dance to. Interestingly, even my parents were getting along just fine. The best word to describe how I felt just then is ‘fantastic.’

Everything was near perfectuntil the accident. As darkness fell, the guests began to leave for their homes. My family was mindful of the fact that the guests would want to spend time with their families as well on Christmas day. Since the party was a great success I decided to try my luck and ask my father permission to take his brand new Porsche out for a spin. Ordinarily, my dad never allows me to drive it but on this occasion, fortunately or unfortunately, he had no second thoughts. My friends were understandably excited to jump into this luxurious vehicle. As I drove out of the gate I felt a unique sense of freedom. All I could think about was when I could throw the next party, an outdoor one this time. Since my parents had taken care of this party’s expenses, my year-long savings were untouched. However, that was for later and I was still in the mood to party. I suggested that we continue partying in the best club in town. Mary was hesitant at first but with a little convincing from my end, she reluctantly gave in. Having reached a consensus, we drove to the‘Secrets Club’, a reputable nightclub in the region. The loud music and disco lights that greeted us just amped up our collective celebratory mood. Driven by the eagerness to experience the life of young adults, we ordered alcoholic drinks. The more we drank, the wilder we became. It was the first time I drank so heavily. Until then I was under the impression that people who blacked out after drinking just did not posses strong enough stomachs. It turned out that I was mistaken and that I had underestimated the power of alcohol. In my rush to get to the Secrets Club, I had not accounted for driving back home in the Porsche under the influence.Nevertheless, I knew that I not only had to take the car back home but I also had to drop Mary home because we lived in the same neighborhood. Despite Mary’s repeated pleas to opt for a cab, I insisted on driving home just to prove that I wasn’t as intoxicated as she thought I was. “Trust me, I will drive safely,” I said. “Okay,” she replied with a tone of despair. Knowing how worried my dad would be getting, my strategy was to make the most of the Porsche and driving as fast as possible. Mary tried her level best to curb my irresponsible driving by continuously asking me to slow down. In my inebriated condition, I was not able to gauge just how fast I was driving which also meant that Mary’s constant nagging was beginning to annoy me. This conflict led to an argument and before I knew it, the car had veered off into the woods. After several minutes of havingblacked out, I woke up to great pain. Mary was loudly shouting for help. Although we both survived the accident, it was not without detrimental consequences. Regrettably, Mary lost her sight, all because of my unnecessary recklessness.

Nothing could justify what I did. Everything would have been all right if only I had acted differently. My poor decision-making skills hadhandicapped my best friend for life. Deep inside, I knew that things would never be the same. Subsequently, the crushing guilt drove me into depression for two whole months. All the same, what has happened cannot be undone (Maros). Guided by this principle, I try to steer my ship towards positivity rather than negativity. In light of everything, it dawned on me that life is all about the choices that people make at the individual level. I realized the need to consider the possible consequences of any given action before actually carrying it out. Most importantly, I discovered the dangers of alcohol.

In conclusion, the day that I thought would remain ingrained in my mind as a happy memory turned out to be my worst. Truth be told, it is distressing for any body to live with the guilt of irreversibly scarring innocent people especially when it is avoidable. Nevertheless, rather than dwell in the past, I chose to become an upright person who always thinks twice before doing anything. Also, abstaining from alcohol became one of my life’s objectives.
