Chapter 7

The songs T for Texas and by Jimmie Rodgers and I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry by Hank Williams are similar in that the only instrumentation used is the artist and the guitar. The songs have a clear influence from the blues and country, but Rodgers shows a greater blend of different genres including country and folk music in addition to yodeling. However, the songs vary in style and performance. Although Rodgers’ tempo is slow, Hank sings at a slower beat compared to him. Rodgers is a bit liberal in his voice, as it seems to rise and fall at will, while Hank is a bit steady. Rodgers uses duplicated and rhyming lines, while Williams repeats the last lines only. Rodgers composed T for Texas as part of the Blue Yodel collection in 1927, but it was released one year later.

Deep Water, Bob Wills, and his Texas Playboys 1951 Snader Telescription perform in a band, similar to Bill Monroe in his version of the Mule Skinner Blues. The songs differ in tempo as Wills, and his playboys’ performance is slow, but Monroe’s is extremely fast-paced. The bands have different instruments as well. The instruments in Monroe’s band include the banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and the fiddle. His yodeling is controlled, measured, and made with extreme planning. The song has influences of different blends including old blues, swing, and country.

Although there are many instruments in Bob’s band, the fiddles take greater prominence. The music is slow and paced, and the breaks allow for more performance of the instruments. The Snader Telescription was released in 1948, but the video was made in the fifties. Monroe’s video is live, but it includes other images that add to the dramatic effect. This concept was new at the time, and it added to the appeal of the video. Monroe was known as the king of bluegrass music. The strings, mandolin, guitar, and fiddle, take the prominent stage in this particular performance although there are other instruments in the band. His voice, like his yodel, is steady and controlled as well. His yodels are in between the verses, unlike Rodgers who uses his yodels as a refrain.

Chapter 8

Robert Johnson’s Preachin the Blues is defined by his extraordinary guitar style which he plays with extreme mastery. His voice and his guitar are the only instrumentation, and he chooses to use them liberally as they raise and fall at his pleasure. There is a sudden switch in tempo as well as an inflection on his vocal tone. This helps in overcoming the relatively rigid structure in the music. Johnson composed the song, which was first released in 1939. However, the song is an influence from an earlier song with the same title by Son House. It contains similar lines to the previous song, but they have slightly different styles. The song is in the delta blues genre, but Johnson differentiates his version through his fast guitar work. This style contrasts with Freddy Blues whereby the piano is the only instrument used, and it is unaccompanied by voice. However, it is played in a fast and predictable rhythmic pattern. The songs are similar in their fast tempo and the use of a single instrument.

This version of Freddy Blues was performed by Pete Johnson, but it was an original composition by Axel Zwingenberger. It is a typical characteristic of the boogie-woogie style with 12-bar structure. It was most common in the 1920s and influenced by a variety of genres including swing, rock, and the blues. The two compare in that they are fast in tempo; Johnson’s being superior. Stevie Ray Vaughan uses a band in his performance of the Texas Flood. He plays the guitar, but there are other instruments such as keyboard and drums, as well as other string instruments in the band. He accompanies the instruments with voice, and he uses a slow tempo. His performance of the blues in the 1980s release marks a change from the music that was common at the time.

The blues had become less popular at the time, but Vaughan managed to create an interest in them again using this song. Texas Flood uses the guitar as the primary instrument. Stevie first plays the guitar for a long time before he accompanies it with voice. His voice is strong and deep but steady and controlled, which cannot be compared with the liberal rise and fall of Johnson. Stevie performs in a band with different instruments including drums and other strings, but they take are in the background while his guitar takes prominence. He plays the guitar with such mastery, which can compare to Johnson.

Chapter 9

Bill Haley and his Comets introduce the world of rock and roll in Rock Around the Clock. The fast-paced music is performed by a band consisting of different instrumentation including the guitar, piano, bass, drum, saxophone, and others. The instruments are accompanied by clapping and extremely fast-paced dancing. The song is rhythmic and repetitive. Max Freedman and James Myers wrote the song and it was released in 1954. The song is a blend of jazz, country, and the blues. The singer performs solo, and the instruments take a prominent part. The song can compare to the Ramones’s Sheena is a Punk Rocker, in that they both have a fast tempo, with Haley’s being superior. Similarly, The Ramones song is accompanied by different instruments including bass, guitar, and drums. Both bands depend on repetition as the main focus in their songs. They repeat the same lines several times.

RUN DMC Walk This Way is an updated version that combines rock n roll and hip-hop. The song was done in 1986, but the original version had been recorded in 1975. The song contains both voice and instrumentation. Eruption Guitar is a solo by Eddie Van Halen. Eddie performs the solo on his electric guitar unaccompanied by other instruments, and he does not use his voice either. The songs place great emphasis on the use of the guitar, which forms the main instruments and sound. Walk This Way is different because of the clear blend of rock n roll and hip-hop, which are markedly different genres. Unlike other musical genres, hip-hop was relatively new to the scene. Rock n roll had an earlier start in the fifties, and its influences regarding music genres were older. Sheena is a punk rocker has the punk sound in addition to including it in the title. Eruption guitar can only be compared to other music regarding the instruments used because the guitar is the only instrument used to make the music
