Hypothetical Deviance Crusade Homework Assignment (30 points)

Instructions:

1) Pick some behavior or thing that will be the target of a crusade that is seeking to have it labeled as deviant.  (2 pts)

2) You will be coming up with 4 different crusaders who have an UNDERLYING or HIDDEN interests in the crusade.  Basically you are identifying how the crusader will benefit from the crusade.

a) Identify one crusader who has an ECONOMIC interest & briefly explain that interest (4 pts);

b) Identify one crusader who has an interest in SOCIAL CONTROL & briefly explain that interest (4 pts);

c) Identify one crusader who has an interest in ONE of the following 4 interests – POLITICAL, PRESTIGE/STATUS, ASSERTION OF MORAL SUPERIORITY, REDUCTION OF RESPONSIBILITY OR GUILT — & briefly explain that interest (4 pts);

d) Identify one crusader who has an interest in ONE of the following 4 interests – POLITICAL, PRESTIGE/STATUS, ASSERTION OF MORAL SUPERIORITY, REDUCTION OF RESPONSIBILITY OR GUILT — & briefly explain that interest (*this interest should differ from the one you use in (c)

above (4 pts).

3) Indicate how the crusaders will frame the problem (as a medical problem, a psychosocial problem, or a criminal problem) & briefly explain why the crusaders will use this frame (4 pts).

4) Provide one example of a legitimate claim that the crusaders will make (why the crusade is necessary – how society will benefit), and one example of normative claim (unlike a legitimate claim, this claim does not reflect some way that the public benefits, but rather has to do with things that the crusaders don’t like about the behavior or thing and those who engage in the behavior or are associated with the thing) (4 pts).

5) Provide 2 reasons why your crusade will either succeed or fail.  (4 pts).
