Paper # 1 — 3 to 5 page paper in MLA style with one source
For this paper, you will use the essay we wrote the first day of class about your relationship with nature, and the reading Last Child in Nature, as well as your own observations.
This is a persuasive paper, and you will take a position about Richard Louv’s Last Child in the Woods. His thesis is that a lack of nature is detrimental to children; that nature gives them a way to process their feelings and work out problems.
Using your own experiences, argue for or against his thesis. Do you feel that you haven’t missed anything by not getting outside as a child? Or do you long for the outdoors and think that younger siblings or friends are missing out by not having the same experiences as you? Quote from the text and use the essays you wrote the first day.
Make sure you have a clear thesis, and use facts and quotes from the texts to support your point of view. Remember to use quotes sparingly and incorporate them into your sentences. Most of the writing should be yours, not quoted. Quotes should never be full sentences; you should introduce each quote with your own writing using signal phrases.
